Her eyes are wide open. Her lips parted as if to speak. Her dead body frozen in the ice…She is not the only one.

When a young boy discovers the body of a woman beneath a thick sheet of ice in a South London park, Detective Erika Foster is called in to lead the murder investigation.

The victim, a beautiful young socialite, appeared to have the perfect life. Yet when Erika begins to dig deeper, she starts to connect the dots between the murder and the killings of three prostitutes, all found strangled, hands bound and dumped in water around London.

What dark secrets is the girl in the ice hiding?

As Erika inches closer to uncovering the truth, the killer is closing in on Erika.

The last investigation Erika led went badly wrong… resulting in the death of her husband. With her career hanging by a thread, Erika must now battle her own personal demons as well as a killer more deadly than any she’s faced before. But will she get to him before he strikes again?

The Girl in the Ice is the page-turning introduction to DCI Erika Foster, and to Rob Bryndza's thriller writing career. This is a thriller that has you intrigued right from the start, and I didn't have a clue who was the murderer.

Erika Foster works not just on evidence but also quite a lot of gut feeling. She is feisty and doesn't always do exactly what her superiors want, which can get her into a lot of trouble. Especially when it comes to investigating the murder of young woman, who comes from a wealthy family. Her father has direct connections to the police, and is determined that nothing at all unsavoury found about his family will be made public.

During the course of the investigation, Erika discovers similarities to other cases, that for various reasons weren't investigated enough. As time progresses, and Erika starts joining the dots, even if the rest of her team aren't convinced, it becomes apparent that the killer is fascinated by Erika.

I was very impressed with this story, and loved seeing how this branch of the police dealt with a murder. It seems to be  strong police procedural, with a thrilling element, and at points I was gasping for breath.

Thankfully The Girl in the Ice is the first book of a brand new series, and I am already looking forward to book 2. There is a lot of depth in Erika's character, especially as her previous investigation before this one, had led to the death of her husband and other officers. Erika is clearly still dealing with that, and I can see various killers, playing on that weakness to exploit her, in the future.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
